Classic New Brunswick sugar cookies — buttery, vanilla-scented, rolled thin and cut, garnished with nut meats, raisins, or candied fruits. One of the most beloved baking standards in the 1938 cookbook.

Ingredients

  • ½ cup butter
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • About 2 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ¾ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • Nut meats, raisins, or candied fruits for garnish

Instructions

  1. Cream the butter, add the sugar gradually.
  2. Add 1½ cups flour mixed and sifted with baking powder and salt. Then add enough more flour to make a dough that can be handled.
  3. Chill the dough. Roll thin.
  4. Garnish with nut meats, raisins, or candied fruits.
  5. Bake in a moderate oven (375°F).
